She sees school innovation as happening in these new spheres, and she wants to be a part of that change. Additionally, she is the CIP coordinator, managing the City’s $150 million capital improvement program.  I have worked with her for 24 and a half years, and I’m thankful to have her as a coworker and friend”.

Corby Alexander, City Manager, echoed the high praise.

She stated that when she began working with the City, the general fund budget was $17.4 million and now it is at an estimated $79.5 million. Her dedication and commitment to furthering her education and career have greatly contributed to the success of the Finance Department. Thirty years later and I am still here, for a reason!”

Gay’s hard work and service have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated.

She reminisced on the City’s barbecue cookoffs that used to take place and picnics at the La Porte wave pool and within the Finance Department, as well as the monthly birthday celebrations for Finance team members.

Michael Dolby, the City's Finance Director, also lauded Gay's long and devoted service, saying, "Gay Collins began her career with the City as an administrative assistant to the Director of Finance.

Gay recently retired so that she could free herself to take on new directions while still remaining immersed in education. Gay Collins

Gay has taught public education for 26 years, starting with middle school language arts and then moving on to high school English, American literature, public speaking, studies in drama, and creative writing.

She is deeply invested in the challenge of reaching young hearts and minds; and she remains focused on the student/teacher relationship. She mentioned how tightly knit the Finance Department team is, as well as the community. She has been around to see how much the City has grown in all aspects but especially regarding its budget.

In the last few years Gay has become increasingly interested in student mental health, school culture, and teacher morale. In the early years, the Finance Department produced 100 copies of the annual budget books, at over 100 pages apiece, that had no room for error since at that time there were no online editing tools. What can now be done digitally she used to have to do manually (remember typewriters and Rolodexes and fax machines?).

He has worked with Gay for nearly a decade and says that “she is the kind of team member that makes our organization so effective and such a great place to build a career – an individual committed to developing her professional knowledge and abilities and working together”.

Gay also noted she’s made some wonderful memories and built great friendships all around.

Her journey began as an administrative secretary before she moved into EMS billing. “We’re all like a family,” she said, “and I am grateful to have them”. She currently serves as a university supervisor within The University of Connecticut’s NEAG School of Education where she helps develop new teachers and speaks and writes publicly on topics related to teaching and learning during these times of change.

It is safe to say that she has had the opportunity to really see it all.

Gay also shared some of her employment milestones and which she felt have really impacted her work environment, starting with changes in technology. She earned National Board Certification in 2003 and became a mentor teacher to new teachers joining the school system.
