While Macklemore was rapping about marriage equality on the Grammys stage, the Disney Channel was making a statement of its own on Sunday, Jan. 26. Last June, Disney channel producers spoke with TV Guide about the groundbreaking decision to include a same-sex couple on the children’s show.
“This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors,” a Disney Channel spokesperson told TV Guide.
Mature issues of this nature are being introduced too early and too soon, and it is extremely unnecessary.”
The Susan and Cheryl characters are not expected to appear on the series after the Jan. 26 episode.

Disney Channel featured its first same-sex couple Sunday night during an episode of “Good Luck Charlie.”
First announced in June 2013, the episode featured lesbian mothers Susan and Cheryl, who drop off their daughter Taylor for a play date to the surprise of Charlie’s parents, played by Leigh-Allyn Baker and Eric Allan Kramer.
“Taylor has two moms!” the father blurts out.
“Wow, nothing gets past you, Bob,” his wife then proclaims sarcastically.
The move was hailed by former Disney Channel star Miley Cyrus last summer.
“I commend Disney for making this step into the light of this generation,” she tweeted.
Conservative group One Million Moms is up in arms about the episode.

This is a huge move for Disney Channel, which has never featured an openly gay character, much less a same-sex couple — no matter what everyone may have speculated about High School Musical‘s Ryan Evans.
