There were certain photos she knew she wanted to end up in the final version of the book. And in fact, Jennifer Beals has put together the ultimate walk down sapphic memory lane with the release of The L Word: A Photographic Journal, a gay tome featuring over 400 candid photographs taken by Beals on the set and behind the scenes. She’s a certified gay icon, and lifelong LGBTQIA ally and advocate.

“Not only to reminisce about the show, but to have it as a jumping off point to joy in a way. After seeing that enthusiasm from fans, she knew she had to share the book with them, so she had a limited batch printed. “I really wanted to make it like a party,” Beals tells me. It calls upon you to expand into that power.”

“I would say that she gave me strength and I offered to her my vulnerability,” she adds, joking that she and Bette both draw boundaries in Sharpie.

It’s the same reason she takes photos, to have a tangible memory. Despite being a commercial failure, the film went on to have a cult status.

Throughout the years, she appeared in several other films such as Dr. Networks release supplementary materials and retrospectives for fans all the time when it comes to mainstream series, but just as queer history has been buried or passed over, The L Word is too often left out of conversations about premium cable television history.

But for the generations of people who were able to see themselves through the characters, there will never be enough words to state it’s significance. With the book, she’s now letting fans into her life and world a bit, providing an intimate look into moments beyond the screen.

Ultimately, Beals’ goal with releasing the book now is to give everyone a sliver of something positive to hold on to.

She’s intellectually curious, which makes her stimulating company…”
