Well have a gay old time

‘You’ll have a swell old time’ didn’t occur to anyone?” to “Intolerance is intolerance no matter how sparkly and fun the outer shell appears” to “They might as well have called Fred and Barney faggots, their meaning is crystal clear.”

Anti-Flintstones, anti-Hanna-Barbera rhetoric began to crowd the blogosphere, adding more vitriol to the chorus of disgust.

A fairly late example of the old use of the word can be found in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, where the phrase "Ron ejaculated loudly" has become a bit of a minor Internet meme as a result.

  • Aroused was originally interchangeable with "roused", but after acquiring sexual connotations this is definitely no longer the case.

This gives us words that are still in use, like "nutcase" (a synonym for "headcase"), "numbnut" (= "numbskull"), "nutty" (crazy), the verb "nut" (headbutt), etc. Rapeseed (word from a Scottish English version of 'rope') is also a type of plant in the mustard and cabbage category use to make vegetable oil.
We'll have a gay old time.

"Bitch", therefore, was left without a counterpart.

  • Jackass or simply "ass" used to only mean "donkey", and was historically the only word used for the animal, but it is now an insult, or a slang term for the posterior in American English. As noted by Terry Pratchett:

Elves are terrific. The soundtrack of Spın̈al Tap II: The End Continues includes a version featuring Paul McCartney, wherein Paul seems to be stifling a giggle as he sings that line.

  • George Carlin distinguished what "fag" and "queer" were on his album Occupation: Foole (1973).

Eventually "sexual fetishism" was used to refer to sexual fixation on an object, and this use overshadowed the original meaning in common language, to the point that "fetish" as a noun for a physical object can seem foreign, and anybody discussing interest in them innocently can sound far dirtier to a younger listener.

    • The derivative, fetishism can still refer to both a sexual or a religious fixation.

It then turned to mean "uncontrollable", e.g. (For example: U.S. congressman Anthony Weiner was an easy punchline after getting into a sexting scandal.) This one was inevitable, given that sausage has a phallic shape, and indeed the word "sausage" is also sometimes used as a euphemism for a penis.

      • Wien is the German name for the capital city of Austria (known in English as Vienna).

The Flintstones are culpable for their actions, whether they are backward, ignorant cave dwellers or not.”

        Intolerant homophobes?

Finally caving (no pun intended)  in response to the growing media frenzy, Warner Brothers Animation announced this morning it would be removing the line from the legendary theme song, and replacing it with a further series of nonsense sounding words – including variations of “Yabba,” “Dabba,” and more than likely but not exclusively “Doo.”

I hate: my best friend from third grade who tricked me into saying I was gay in front of the whole class because I- I just thought it meant happy.

  • Some younger tropers assume that the song "The Lady is a Tramp" is an example of this, because the "tramp" once only meant "hobo", not "promiscuous woman".

This example is notable because 'gay' was used to mean "lame" specifically because of the connotations of homosexuality it already had; casual homophobia was quite common in the late 90s, especially among teenagers.

  • 'Queer' originally meant "strange or odd" and later came to refer to homosexuals, sometimes pejoratively and sometimes not.

That it is for neanderthals? The uproar was largely unexpected, considering how long any Flintstones treatment of the issue would have already been on record.

“For over a half century now, The Flintstones theme song has cavalierly touted that when you’re with them you will have a ‘gay old time,'” CNN anchor Anderson Cooper said on the air Tuesday.

In the context of many early science fiction stories, it could mean somebody training to be a (military) astronaut.

However related to the shift above, Gooner is now more commonly used either as a self title for people who practice gooning or a derogatory term for porn addicts.

    • Tramp used to refer to bums, hobos, vagrants, drifters, or vagabonds (hence, for example, Lady and the Tramp).

"Dog" as an insult became a minor example of Get Thee to a Nunnery, as during the mid-20th century, "dog" became a synonym for "dude" (as in "S'up, dog?") and lost its connotations as an insult. Consequently, this use has fallen out of favor since the late 2000s to early 2010s, and is rarely if ever used in this way even now, making works from the era where it was common half an example of this, and half an example of Get Thee to a Nunnery depending on the context.

It's sometimes still used in the original way in philosophy.

    • Bestiality technically means "savagery" or "acting in a bestial manner" (indeed, "bestial" is just the adjectival form of the word). If you have one that's more specific or less known, it's better off in the "Other" folder.)
