Use of Homophobic Slurs in His Early Career

Marshall Mathers III, better known as Eminem, has been known to use homophobic language throughout his career. Notably, he has been a close friend and supporter of Elton John, an openly gay musician and performer.

The Candace Owens Controversy

Eminem’s on-and-off relationship with the LGBTQ+ community has often raised eyebrows, leaving both fans and critics to speculate about his own sexuality.

“I’m more shocked that people haven’t figured it out yet,” Eminem tells James Franco’s character. I’m just like, whatever.”

He has also been linked to celebrities like Rihanna and has been the subject of dating rumors involving Mariah Carey. The story takes a dark turn, leading to Joyner’s suicide, only to be followed by a twist revealing that Eminem, too, is gay.

Unreleased Coming Out Song

Another instance that fueled speculation occurred when Eminem and fellow rapper Joyner Lucas recorded an unreleased track titled “What If I Was Gay.” The song, which was leaked online in 2019 and again in 2022 with slight changes to Eminem’s verse, presents a narrative where Joyner is the openly gay person and Eminem is his Christian friend who disapproves of his sexuality.

The rapper revealed that a key moment in the 2014 movie was delayed because he couldn’t stop laughing at James Franco’s over-the-top antics.

During an interview on Sway in the Morning, the 52-year-old rapper explained how Franco’s humour made it hard to stay serious while shooting a scene where he jokingly comes out as gay.

In The Interview, directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Eminem made a cameo as himself.

The movie follows two journalists, played by Rogen and Franco, who are recruited by the CIA to interview North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

In a comedic twist, Franco’s character, Dave Skylark, interviews Eminem, leading to the rapper’s fictional revelation about his sexuality.

Reflecting on the experience, Eminem said, “James Franco was so f***ing funny,” recalling how his over-the-top humour caused multiple takes to go off track.

“Yo, I gotta tell you, man: James Franco was so f***ing funny.”

“I couldn’t – it was very hard.”

“There was a few takes where we had to stop, like, I couldn’t stop laughing.”

Eminem described Franco’s performance as “animated”.

“He [Franco] was so animated and it was like, damn, I wanna be the funny one here,” the best-selling rapper admitted.

“He was killin’ it.”

In the outrageous scene, journalist Dave Skylark (Franco) interviews Eminem about his latest album.

Staying completely deadpan, Eminem’s character responds, “Well, first of all, when I rap, I feel like people twist my words.”

Then, in the most casual manner, he drops the bombshell, “When I say things about gay people, if people think that my lyrics are homophobic, it’s because I’m gay.”

This leaves the team behind the camera, questioning if they heard him right.

The line sparked discussion at the time, as Eminem has faced criticism for using homophobic slurs in his music.

However, he has previously clarified that he holds no ill will toward the LGBTQ+ community.
