However, the allure of the spotlight proved too strong, and Dupree stepped back into the ring with Colt. It was just a completely signature look of an underground movie, which was one of the first ones I ever saw. Folsom Street in San Francisco became arguably the global center of leather culture, with the annual Folsom Street Fair beginning in 1984, a massive celebration of all things BDSM and buckle-based.
While both leather culture and motorcycle clubs are open to more people than they once were, they ultimately grew out of a celebration of manliness and red-blooded masculinity.
I always write to the person who sends me the calendar, to let them know who looks the best.
Tell me about the wildest party you’ve ever been to?
The wildest party I’ve ever been to was in San Francisco. But when I used to go to the [biker] bar and there’d be fights it would be like a Western. According to Dark Side of the Ring, when Colt didn’t have enough cash for drugs, he’d pose as a police officer and rob drug dealers at gunpoint.
Booked to wrestle in a cage match, Colt decided to change up his usual rematch routine of getting drunk and instead dropped acid before the bout. However, he soon learned just how difficult becoming a wrestler was going to be. They got to talking and shared a drink. I thought “Wow this is like being in an American Western this is fun.” I wasn’t violent but it was sort of amazing to see the bikers fight.

Jack Fritscher said he assumed all the performers he worked with in the 1980s either had AIDS or eventually contracted it. So what do I make of them? In 1953, Marlon Brando starred in The Wild One, loosely based on the Hollister incident, and solidified the look—leathers, sideburns, and a Muir cap (named after the company that made headwear for German officers in World War II).
His iconic look immediately became a sensation, with men who had no intention of ever boarding a motorcycle trying to emulate him.
Something about it resonated particularly within the gay community. This eventually led to the creation of his character Kake, the big-mustached leatherman hero of an adult comic book. Where the bad kids are usually the ones that ended up being interesting later in life.
Upstairs was all the right kind of guys who dressed as black rappers like Eminem types. How did that happen?
After World War II, a lot of men returned to civilian life changed. Colt also wrestled for smaller regional promotions that did not receive coverage from any major wrestling magazines, and he never stayed in any of these promotions for long.
Their children were caught in the middle. Had he been otherwise, he wouldn’t have been Chris Colt — pro wrestling’s unsung pioneer, original bi bad boy, and a true American original.
